Water conditioning, or "softening" systems work by removing certain "hard" minerals found in your water, such as calcium, magnesium and iron, and replacing these hard water mineral ions with "soft" ions such as sodium.

Faucet-Mounted Filters
Faucet-mounted water filters are easy to install, may be turned on and off, and allow for direct tap access.
Counter Top Filters
Counter top filters have a higher capacity than faucet-mounted filters, and therefore are able to dispense water at much higher pressure. Because of their higher capacity, counter top filters also remove more contaminants than faucet-mounted filters.
Under Sink Filters
Like faucet-mounted and counter top water filtration, under sink filters also require filter replacement, but these filters hide beneath the sink with only a separate faucet visible. Under sink filters can also be extremely effective at removing contaminants.
Reverse Osmosis
Reverse Osmosis forces water through a selective membrane designed with microscopic openings that allow water to pass through, but catch harmful compounds. Some selective membranes can remove salt from seawater, turning it into usable freshwater!
A reverse osmosis system doesn't just have one filter stage; it actually has three or more. Before entering the selective membrane, your drinking water passes through a pre-filter that prevents any debris from entering the system and clogging the membrane. Some units even feature pre-filters that include activated carbon, which removes chlorine particles and other harmful contaminants. Then water travels through the membrane. Any harmful compounds or common impurities that don't pass through that selective membrane are removed and shed back through the drain. Finally, your drinking water is routed to a holding tank, where it's eventually drawn from the tap. Before the exiting the faucet, there's one last step – your water goes through a final carbon filtration stage to eliminate any remaining bad tastes or odors.

Inline Water Treatment Filters
Inline water treatment filters are simply water filters than are installed directly into your home's plumbing.
Because inline water treatment filters perform within an existing pipe, they are a great option for homeowners who want to save as much space as possible. Inline water treatment filters can serve many water treatment functions; some filter chlorination, some conduct water softening to counteract "hard" water, some eliminate bacteria, and some units can do all of the above.
Microbial Water Filtration and Purification
Suburban Morris recommends two microbial water filtration and purification methods to eliminate bacteria in New Jersey homes: ultra-filtration water filter systems and ultraviolet water purification systems.
Microbial water filtration or purification is the process of removing unwanted microbes, or microorganisms, from water. Microbe is a larger term encompassing organisms such as bacteria, mold, and algae. While certain types of microbes are needed in a healthy environment, microbial water filtration aims to eliminate the unwanted and potentially dangerous microbes, especially certain disease- and illness-causing bacteria.
Ultrafiltration
A reverse osmosis alternative
Ultrafiltration is a process that forces water through a hollow fiber membrane, removing certain suspended elements such as bacteria. Although ultrafiltration water filter systems remove fewer contaminants than reverse osmosis systems, ultrafiltration filters have a small footprint and can be installed fairly easily.
Ultraviolet (UV) Purification

The other reliable form of eliminating microbes in water is ultraviolet (UV) water purification, a safe and quick method of destroying microbes using ultraviolet light. This form of water treatment is especially important for New Jersey residents who rely on well water, since harmful bacteria such as E. Coli can congregate in wells without proper treatment. The UV purification process uses special lamps or bulbs that emit UV light at a certain wavelength, thereby altering certain microbes' ability to replicate and affect other organisms in water. Used in conjunction with pre- and post-filters, UV purification can be up to 99.99% effective at eliminating bacteria from your water.
Arsenic Removal Filters

Arsenic is an odorless and tasteless (and therefore hard to detect) metallic substance that occurs naturally in New Jersey's rocks, soil, and water sources. Dangerously high levels of arsenic can come from certain fertilizers and animal feeding operations. Very high levels of arsenic can cause a lot of harm to you and your family.

While arsenic is diligently removed from New Jersey's municipally controlled water sources, high levels may still occur in well and ground water. While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers any arsenic level under 10 parts per billion (ppb) to be safe, certain New Jersey "hotspots" may have levels close to 10ppb or even higher.

Chlorine Removal Systems

New Jersey municipalities often add chlorine to water sources to prevent waterborne contamination. While chlorine treatment does help to kill harmful bacteria at its source, it is no longer necessary once the water reaches your home, and it often results in over-chlorinated water that smells too strong, tastes bad, damages hair and clothing, and irritates the eyes, skin and nose.

Sediment Removal Systems

Water that appears murky or cloudy often contains high levels of sediment. This condition is more common with well-fed water sources. While not necessarily a health risk, high sediment levels can affect the taste of your drinking water, and can seriously corrode or damage your appliances.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are emitted from certain solids or liquids, such as paints and lacquers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials, office equipment, permanent markers, and glues and adhesives. Because these items are most commonly stored and used inside the home, VOCs tend to be 2-5 times higher indoors, than out. VOCs can cause serious health complications, and some are known carcinogens.

VOCs may enter New Jersey water sources in many different ways, though high concentrations found near wells or surface water is most often the culprit. Sometimes, however, it is impossible to determine the source of VOC contamination, so it is often more time efficient and cost effective to remove VOCs from within the home.

Salt-Free Water Softeners
If it Sounds Too Good to Be True, it is!
Have you heard about "Salt-Free" Water Conditioning Systems? Are you wondering if they really work to soften your water?

Very simply, the answer is NO. Frankly, if salt-free water softeners actually worked, Suburban Morris would be offering the best of the best. Unfortunately, systems that promise water softening with a smaller, salt-free water treatment system are not telling the whole story. Salt-free water softeners are better known as "descalers," and while a descaler doesn’t actually remove dissolved minerals as salt-based water softeners do, it may change the crystal structure of the minerals in your water to prevent hard scales from forming as quickly, giving the appearance of soft water. However, this is short-lived. The minerals are still in your water and where water sits for any time, such as in your hot water heater or inside your pipes, damaging mineral scale will form. Also, because calcium is not removed from your water as with a traditional water softener, more energy is required to heat your water.

In fact, tests show that there’s very little difference in the levels of dissolved hard water minerals found in water before and after treatment with salt-free water descalers. And yet, companies selling these products still insist on calling them "water softeners" to deceive people with hard water problems.
